How to deal with the flu: How to get back to work

If you’re feeling sick or anxious about the flu, it might be time to get up and go for a walk.

But don’t let the cold weather dampen your spirits, as there’s no better way to kick-start your weekend than by taking a walk, says physiotherapists Brad Neal and Chris Larkin.

“It’s one of the best ways of getting into your day,” Mr Neal says.

“If you’re in the cold, you’re going to want to get your feet wet.”

Dr Neal has worked in intensive care units for 30 years and is a member of the Australian College of Physiotherapies.

“I always encourage patients to go out to get a run on their feet, get a walk around the block and go about their daily activities,” he says.

Dr Neel says a good walk around a block is also an ideal way to get some fresh air, which is why he recommends running at least three times a week.

“In addition to walking, you can get up, you go to a gym, go to your local park, go for an afternoon run, play golf and so on,” he explains.

“You can have fun and it can also relieve the stress of the flu.”

Dr Larkin agrees, and says it’s important to get away from the computer screen and onto the grass, as well as enjoying a walk with a friend.

“A lot of people who get the flu tend to go for walks and do a few rounds of golf,” he notes.

“We also have a good group of walkers that come to our facilities for about every three weeks or so, to help us out.”

Dr Phil says that if you can’t get out for a run, there’s plenty of other ways to get active.

“Some people don’t want to go to work and they’re very anxious about getting home, so they take the bus, or they take a bike, or whatever it is,” he adds.

“But if you have a bit of energy and some time to spare, you should definitely do that.”
